Women’s History Month

The SCC Library staff created an interesting display in honor of National Women’s Month. To compliment the display here are some resources on the web to learn more about our nation’s women.

Narratives of the American South
This website includes diaries and other personal narratives of Southern women slaves, writers, soldiers, slaves, and other notable southern women.

African-American Women’s Resources

African American Women Writers of the 19th Century
The Schomburg Collection contains published works by 19th century black women writers.  

 From Slave Women to Free Women: The National Archives & Black Women’s History in the Civil War Era
This article by Noralee Frankel appeared in the Summer 1997 edition of NARA’s publication, Prologue.


 American Women in Space  
This site contains a link to biographies of women in space history.


The Constitution: The 19th Amendment
This site gives brief descriptions of events which lead to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the constitution which gave all American Women the right to vote

Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony
The Public broadcasting network offers an overview of the lives of Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Also contains essays, articles, and original documents on the history of women’s rights.
